Ken Osmond once addressed the rumor that he married Barbara Billingsley
Ken Osmond on the truth behind the weirdest Leave It To Beaver rumor.
How many times have you watched Leave It To Beaver and said, "I wonder what would happen if Eddy Haskell grew up and married Mrs. Cleaver?" If you said none, you're in good and normal company. However, this isn't just a what-if game. Apparently, in the years following the ending of Leave It To Beaver, a haywire rumor persisted that Ken Osmond, best known for playing two-faced Eddie Haskell, had gone on to marry Barbara Billingsley, best known as Mrs. June Cleaver.
The rumor was so unrelenting that in 1988, Osmond actually addressed it during an interview with the New York Times. He clarified, "I didn't marry Barbara, but I would in a minute." He continued, "The thing is, she wouldn't have me. As far back as I can remember she's been gentle and sweet."
To be honest, just because the rumor is outlandish doesn't mean that you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who wouldn't want a Barbara Billingsley in their life. Tony Dow actually called Barbara Billingsley "my favorite friend" and added. "The thing that's really amazing is that she's so elegant but just so down to earth." Jerry Mathers also commented, "Barbara is just as nice in person as she is on TV. She's a very gracious and lovely person."
It seems that everyone is a little in love with June Cleaver, including Barbara Billingsley herself. She said, "It doesn't bother me that I'm June Cleaver. It's a good career." She also added, "I don't know where June starts and Barbara ends. Our lives are so similar."
However, she added, "I don't know why she's so popular," but also ventured, "Maybe it's because she had such a clean kitchen."
