Kent McCord explained why he chose not to make his directorial debut on an episode of Adam-12

The actor wasn't interested in directing an episode of a series he starred in.

Perhaps the best plan for the future is to simply live in and enjoy the present. Kent McCord had won the role of a lifetime when he was cast as Officer Jim Reed. While the series lasted for an incredibly successful seven seasons, McCord wasn't sure when the end of Adam-12 would arrive, but he certainly wasn't going to spend his life worrying about it.

"After Adam-12 could mean next year," said McCord during an interview with the San Angelo Standard-Times. "Or the year after. But sometime there will be a period in my life known as 'After Adam-12.'"

Of course, after his incredible acting in Adam-12, McCord was a sought-after actor; he had no reason to be stressed.

"Well, I hope everything will work out," said the actor. "I have a commitment to do a pilot for Universal. There are two stories being worked on now. One is about a policeman on duty at a school. The other is a Western. I'll probably do one or the other...I'd also like to do feature films - but that's not too surprising, is it? Every actor would like to do features."

McCord was also interested in working as a director. However, he had every opportunity to direct an episode of his own series. However, he refused to direct an Adam-12 episode for a very good reason. The actor felt that the attempt wouldn't necessarily be genuine.

"The crew is so friendly and nice, they would see to it that I didn't fail," said McCord."

It speaks well of the crew of Adam-12 that they'd want to help out their friend, but it shows real strength that McCord wanted to stand on his own two feet during his directorial debut.
