Peter Cushing on his feelings towards Christopher Lee

Take a guess... Were the duo friends or enemies?!

Onscreen chemistry does not pair naturally with offscreen friendship. There's something intangible about a natural entertainment rapport; we're not sure exactly what makes two actors such wonderful scene partners, but we know it when we see it. While that quality might develop from a relationship outside of work, there are plenty of examples of people who didn't get along despite their clear on-camera magic. Martin and Lewis had something undeniable in all their time together in shows and movies, but their real-life situation was bitter and resulted in a lifelong feud. Bea Arthur and Betty White reportedly didn't get along at all, despite how many scenes Rose and Dorothy shared.

So what, then, was the connection like between Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing? The legendary duo made a total of 24 films together across many genres, but are best remembered for their horror offerings. Was their relationship amicable, or was it as scary as the action on cinema screens?

As it turns out, they weren't just together a lot because it was lucrative. Each had a genuine admiration for the other, and Cushing, in particular, gushed about his frequent co-star in the Fall 1973 edition of Cinefantastique:

Among many accomplishments— perhaps unknown to this public— he is a Greek Scholar, he possesses a magnifcent bass singing voice, a wonderful knack for impersonation, has a command of at least six languages, is an expert swordsman and superb amateur golfer. Couple all this with a delicious sense of humor and wit— plus a deep personal kindness— then you will be getting somewhat closer to the real personality of this truly remarkable man.

Peter Cushing sounds like the ultimate wingman, building up his buddy to almost unrealistic heights of charm and likeability.

Beyond Lee's personal qualities, Cushing goes on to praise his professional prowess as well. Cushing is forthcoming about his friend's hard work, determination, and resolution, insisting that Lee reached career heights based solely on his own sheer drive in the face of stiff competition.

More than anything, though, Peter Cushing insists that his friend Christopher Lee made it all look easy— perhaps the biggest compliment an actor can receive!
