MeTV Network celebrates legendary actor Bob Newhart with a special two-part episode of The Carol Burnett Show, in which he was a guest star, airing on Sunday, July 21st at 10:30P | 9:30C and Monday, July 22nd at 11P | 10C.

Bob Newhart, the former accountant who became a household name with his deadpan delivery and stammering style of comedy, has passed away.

Newhart worked as an accountant after graduating college in the early 1950s. After a career change to the advertising industry later that decade, Newhart decided to test the waters of stand-up comedy. In the late 1950s, Newhart worked at nightclubs and was signed to Warner Bros. Records. In 1960, the label released his comedy album The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. It was the first comedy album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts and won Newhart two Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist.

After two more successful albums, Newhart was offered an opportunity for a variety show on NBC. The show was called The Bob Newhart Show and while it earned an Emmy nomination for comedy writing and a Peabody, it only lasted a single season. Newhart found that the responsibility of overseeing a variety show quickly made him exhausted.

After the end of the (first) Bob Newhart Show, Newhart went back to performing in nightclubs and guest-starring on TV. He was a frequent guest on The Dean Martin Show, as well as The Ed Sullivan Show

In 1972, Newhart returned to a regular role on TV with The Bob Newhart Show in 1972. Unlike the first one that shared the title, this was a sitcom instead of a variety show. Newhart played the lead Dr. Robert "Bob" Hartley, a clinical psychologist living in Chicago with his wife played by Suzanne Pleshette.

The show was an immediate hit despite heavy competition from powerhouses like M*A*S*H and The Waltons. In 1997, TV Guide listed two of the episodes -  "Over the River and Through the Woods" and "Death Be My Destiny" as two of the 100 best TV episodes of all time. However, by 1978, Newhart chose to end the show, feeling as if it had come to a natural end and not wanting it to grow stale.

By 1982, Newhart was ready for a new TV challenge. What followed was Newhart, where he once again starred, but this time as Dick Loudon, a New York author turned proprietor of the Stratford Inn in Vermont.

When the show wrapped after eight seasons in 1990, it was with what some consider the best series ending in TV history. Famously, the final scene of the series showed Newhart waking up as Dr. Hartley, in bed with Suzanna Pleshette, revealing that the entirety of Newhart had been a dream within The Bob Newhart Show.

Despite being known for his TV work, Newhart was also a familiar face (and voice!) on the big screen. In 1977, he lent his voice to the animated Disney film The Rescuers, where bumbling mouse Bernard (voiced by Newhart) teams up with the much more savvy Bianca (voiced by Eva Gabor) to rescue a child in danger. The pair reprised their roles in the 1990 sequel The Rescuers Down Under.

Newhart also appeared in the 2003 Will Ferrell movie Elf, where he played "Papa Elf", the adoptive father of Buddy the Elf.

In 2013, he finally earned his first Emmy, which many considered overdue. The award came from his recurring role on The Big Bang Theory as "Professor Proton", a former children's television science program host who Sheldon and Leonard grew up idolizing.

Newhart was the fifth person to be awarded the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, joining esteemed colleagues like Richard Pryor and Carl Reiner.

The comedian and icon was 94 years old.

I remember my aunt and uncle had the classic "Button- Down mind" album in the 60s. Some of it is posted on YouTube and it is hilarious!

R.I.P Bob, you were one of the great ones.

I was deeply disappointed that the only tribute this great man got from MeTV was two half-hour episodes of the "Carol Burnett Show" that he appeared on. I was expecting to see on Sunday July 21, 4 episodes (2 hours) of "The Bob Newhart Show" and maybe the "Alfred Hitchcock Hour" episode "How To Get Rid Of Your Wife" which shows a darker side of his humor. What about his appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show?" It's not too late, MeTV, maybe next Sunday?

Bob has been one of my favorite people for many years.Saturdays in the 70s and Mondays in the 80s. I always liked his characters. When he appeared on talk shows he always seemed like a great guy. He might be gone but he’s left us with a whole bunch of memories and reruns.

Master of dry wit, deadpan delivery, and timing. All without polarizing opinion or commentary. The kind of person I would have enjoyed just having a conversation with.He will be missed and fondly remembered.

Amen to that.

I can hear Sheldon Cooper saying something of the sort, "oh dear! Professor Proton! I will certainly miss him!"

Several people have mentioned how funny "Over the River and Through the Woods" (the Moo Goo Gai Pan episode) was, but the other one that made the list of the 100 best TV episodes of all time, "Death be my Destiny" has some of the funniest scenes of the series. After Bob almost dies by falling down an elevator shaft and develops a phobia of elevators, Howard explains to him that a person can die under any number of circumstances. He comes up with this convoluted series of events that begins with dropping the top of the salt shaker and ends with Bob slipping on roller skates and getting strangled by the drapes. Emily comments that they don't own any roller skates, and Howard calmly concludes, "Well then Bob will never die."

As I sat and watched the final episode of Newhart when the final scene he awoke in bed with Suzanne (Emily, I believe was her character name) and told of his dream and that she should "wear more sweaters" I said to myself, "Self, that has got to be the Greatest Ending to a Sitcom !". You'll missed dearly Bob, RIP.

I remember him on “SNL” where his character is practically kidnapped from the street to be on “The Dating Game”. Then there is the movie “Cold Turkey”, a rare bad guy role and underrated movie.

He was just a one of a kind. His shows were absolutely flawless comedy from beginning to end. You cannot top the ending episode of his last show. I could not stop laughing and gasping in amazement for hours after it ended.

Did you watch The Bob Newhart Show Twentieth (NINETEENTH!) Anniversary, which followed the original airing of the Newhart finale?
At the end of it, Bob Hartley comes out of his office, walks over to the elevators and presses the button. The left elevator doors open to reveal three repairmen...Larry, Darryl and Daryl.
Bob takes the stairs...

Definitely. Priceless. Both those shows were timeless.

WOW - so sorry to learn about this great talent and tremendous comedic actor that graced the lives of millions of folks at all levels while being rather a modest personality that America loved - May the True LORD Bless Bob forever with the peace & serenity of GOD's Kingdom to all - Amen - Alleluia!

Another great one gone. He really had such a way of the understated and facilitating the crazy all around him. That said, a favorite moment for me is the Thanksgiving episode of The Bob Newhart Show. "More Moo Goo Gai Pan"...😁
kkvegas LalaLucy 4 months ago
Then he identifies himself to the restaurant as "Durr Bob Hartley. Durr. D R period." And when the deliver guy shows up, he says, "How ya doin' Durr?"
LalaLucy kkvegas 4 months ago
Yes!😄 Love that!
Moverfan LalaLucy 1 month ago
And he says while Emily's getting her purse to.pay him (in traveler's checks), he turns from the handtruck full of moo goo gai pan and says he's got to go back down and get all their fortune cookies!

I'm 75 years-old and have followed Bob's entire career. He was one of the funniest people I have ever seen on t.v. or anywhere else for that matter. Bob Newhart had the greatest comedic timing and delivery of any comedian in history. May you rest in peace Bob. The world is going to miss you!

My aunt and uncle had a copy of Button-Down Mind. I wonder if my aunt still does. Uncle Dick passed away several years ago, but Aunt Sue still lives.

I purchased 'The Button Down World of Bob Newhart' on cd many years ago, and it makes me laugh every time I listen to it. His skit as Abe Lincoln's 'PR' man is one for the ages!

I remember seeing a clip once of his being on the phone with Sir Walter Raleigh, who's telling him about tobacco ("You put it in your mouth...and you set it on fire...")--his lordship is very serious and Bob thinks this is the funniest damn thing he's ever heard. Is that on the album?

This brought tears to my eyes as I hadn’t heard yet. My fav comedian from his stand up his shows. He had such great timing and expressions- dry as a bone and hysterical as a funny bone! R.I.P. Bob! You will be greatly missed!
