Sally Struthers had a crush on Rob Reiner during filming of All in the Family

Were sparks flying off-camera?

When two people pretend to be a couple for years, it's not surprising that somewhere along the way, some very real feelings might develop.

According to America's First Family, that was the case between Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner. The two actors played the Stivics for several years on the hit series, All in the Family, before departing in the later seasons.

Gloria and Mike had no shortage of love for each other for the majority of the series. Plenty of Archie's more disgusted moments are directed at the couple's public displays of affection. But off camera, the entire cast got along with each other surprisingly well. Believe it or not, Struthers confessed that during filming, she harbored a bit of a crush on Reiner.

"I was crazy about him," said Struthers. "I even courted him by sending him candy when he put on an evening of plays," Struthers added that while the two co-stars went out to dinner a few times, nothing real ever developed from it. Reiner would go on to marry fellow comedic actor Penny Marshall. Strangely enough, Struthers would beat Marshall out for the role of Gloria during the audition process for All in the Family.

While Gloria might seem a bit absent-minded at times in the series, Struthers worked hard to make her character something worth watching. Like any good actor, she developed her character deeply.

"I didn't think I presented myself on AITF as a dummy. Granted, the character I play is one-dimensional, but she's not dumb - naive is more like it," said Struthers.
