The Big Valley ran into a few issues while shooting the second season of their show in California

The Golden State wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

California is home to some beautiful sights. If you love nature and wide, spanning landscapes, you might try to plan a vacation over there before you get too old to enjoy it. Not only is California a great state to appreciate the great outdoors, but it's also home to a booming entertainment industry, and has been for many years.

While plenty of television shows were filmed on set in California, many TV crews braved the trip to more scenic views to shoot on location.

Westerns like The Big Valley, for example, greatly benefited from the vast outdoors that California had to offer.

During an interview with The Daily Report, series producer Arthur Gardner explained that film crews frequently took advantage of the state during filming.

"We again plan to film several segments in the real Big Valley of California - the San Joaquin - later this spring," said Gardner as the series began preparations for its second season. "It is important for the series to get out in the mountains and the valleys of the Golden State...We also intend to use other locations, perhaps in the Sierras, as needed throughout the season."

These areas were incredibly popular destinations for tourists and travelers alike, which made filming a bit more difficult. More people meant more houses and buildings, which meant fewer wide open spaces for The Big Valley to shoot. Environmental issues also affected the shooting schedule.

"Location shootings have become a serious problem for The Big Valley and other Western productions," said producer Jules Levy. "The dual problem of the growth of Southern California pushing homes into the former ranch land and smog has forced us to go further and further to get good locations within driving time of our home base at Four Star Studios in Studio City."
