This was why Rod Serling said it was difficult to define The Twilight Zone

"It's difficult to give a genetic classification, a single definition of the series," said The Twilight Zone creator.

One of the more beautiful elements of The Twilight Zone is its elusiveness. It spans across genres, shifts tones at the drop of a hat, and plenty of episodes are still considered some of the best of television to this day. But even the greatest of Twilight Zone fans still struggle to pin it down, to define it in concrete terms. Perhaps that's what keeps audiences coming back to the series after all these years, still chasing after the impossible.

Even Rod Serling, creator of The Twilight Zone, acknowledged how hard it would be to describe the series in a clear manner. However, he didn't seem to see it as an issue.

"It's difficult to give a genetic classification, a single definition of the series," said Serling during an interview with The Modesto Bee. "I guess you can say it's stories of imagination. They all tilt from the center — unreal, told in terms of reality. No, they're not vehicles of social criticism. They're mature adult stories."

Still, these mature stories were incredibly popular amongst fans and actors, which frequently worked to the show's benefit.

"One of the real strengths of the show is that we've written the scripts with specific people in mind, and most of the actors we've approached have accepted the roles."

While plenty have claimed that a series like The Twilight Zone is at the apex of all things sci-fi, Serling again disagreed.

"This is not science fiction; it's sheer fantasy we're doing," said Serling. So, perhaps we'll never truly be able to communicate what The Twilight Zone is, but that certainly doesn't mean we'll ever stop trying!
