You haven't seen vampires like THIS before: 8 blood-sucking recommendations!
Some recommendations for a frighteningly good time!
"The children of the night… What music they make!"
Don't get us wrong, we love Dracula (1931). Tod Browning got a performance out of Bela Lugosi that still gives us the willies. While you can't improve on perfection, you can switch it up and take in a new fright or two!
That's why we've decided to provide you with some new recommendations. It can get a little stale in those coffins, you know? So, if you like vampires, this is a list for you! Check it out, and maybe you'll come away with a new favorite!
1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter
We'll start with a new telling of a classic tale. The Last Voyage of the Demeter takes the first chunk of Braham Stoker's Dracula and spins it into a feature-length film. It's a must-see for any fan of the story!
2. Renfield
Renfield is another update on the age-old story. This one sees Nicholas Hoult as the title character, long devoted to his abusive master, Dracula. The famous vampire is brought to life with an over-the-top performance by Nic Cage!
3. 30 Days of Night
This movie, based on the same-named comic book story, takes an interesting "What if?" approach to vampires. They can't meet sunshine, so what if vampires came to a town in Alaska that's cloaked in darkness for weeks at a time?
4. Habit
Filmmaker Larry Fessenden treats vampirism as a metaphor in this 1995 independent feature. Here, the writer/director highlights how much the well-known mythology has in common with addiction. Scary, indeed!
5. Let the Right One In
Kids can be so cruel, especially in this 2008 Swedish horror film! A little boy becomes friends with a vampire girl who starts to protect him from bullies. Be sure to see the original and not the lousy American remake.
6. Thirst
Nothing is what it seems in this 2009 Korean horror film about a Catholic priest who turns into a vampire after a failed medical experiment. Oh! And it's also a love story!
7. Nosferatu the Vampyre
Featuring one of the most terrifying performances on this list (courtesy of Klaus Kinski) this Werner Herzog update of F.W. Murnau's classic is maybe the most notorious movie here. The score, by German musical collective Popol Vuh, is absolutely hypnotic!
8. Cronos
An ancient scarab grants its wearer eternal life, but... Uh oh! It also comes with an unquenchable thirst for blood. This is the first feature film from Master of Horror Guillermo del Toro!
