Can you guess which episodes of The Andy Griffith Show actually aired in black & white?

Prove you have a photographic memory for Mayberry.

When The Andy Griffith Show premiered, episodes aired in black & white, and we wouldn't find out for several seasons about Andy's tan uniform or those green bars around his desk.

There were so many details about Mayberry that came to light once the episodes shifted to color, but there were also shifts in characters, with favorites leaving the show, making room for new faces in town.

Think you can tell the difference between episodes of The Andy Griffith Show that aired in color and in black & white?

Prove you've got a photographic memory for Mayberry by scrolling through the scenes below. We've converted all color episodes to black & white, so it's up to you to figure out which ones should be in color, and which ones you truly saw in grayscale. Good luck!
  1. After Don Knotts left The Andy Griffith Show, his big comeback arrived with "The Return of Barney Fife." Was the episode in color or black & white?
  2. Did Opie have to deal with his first bully in color or black & white?
  3. Any fan will remember this sweet scene where Aunt Bee almost decides to leave. Did it happen in color or in black & white?
  4. When Gomer Pyle joined the Marines, it happened on The Andy Griffith Show. Was the episode in color or black & white?
  5. Sam Jones also got his own spin-off in Mayberry, R.F.D. Did he first appear on The Andy Griffith Show in black & white episodes or color?
  6. Seeing "Aunt Bee on TV" was a highlight of the series. Do you remember if her appearance within the show was in color or black & white?
  7. Andy served as umpire for "The Ball Game," which led to this rowdy scene, but was the episode in color or black and white?
  8. "The Christmas Story" saw Andy and Ellie singing sweetly by a tinsel-draped tree. Was it a black & white Christmas or full color?
  9. Andy had some 'splainin' to do when he took a trip to Raleigh and ended up poolside wearing a girl's shades who wasn't Helen. Did this happen in color or black & white?
  10. Andy and Barney tried to stomach Aunt Bee's recipe in "The Pickle Story," but were their grimaces in color or black & white?
  11. Howard Sprague is a fan favorite Mayberry character, but in "Howard's New Life," he ditched N.C. for more tropical conditions. Did it happen in color or black & white?
  12. Last question. In "Mountain Wedding," Barney poses as the bride to lure Ernest T. Bass from the scene. Was he a blushing bride in color or black & white?
Can you guess which episodes of The Andy Griffith Show actually aired in black & white?

Not surprising. I couldn't stand the color episodes. Never watched them.

11/12. I got screwed on that trick question about aunt Bee making her television debut. I thought they meant on the AGS! 😆

12/14?? Is someone using the new math or are they counting 8 and 10 twice because of the colorization?

I was 12/12 but this was a easy quiz IMO.

12 out of 12. I loved both color and black and white and Ron Howard and Don Knotts and Eleanor Donohue were my favorite people to watch on there.
12/12. Very easy. I liked Elinor Donahue as well (and I'm a Father Knows Best fan), but I'm also a big fan of the color episodes, partly because I like Howard Sprague.

12/12! Easy when you remember 2 things: TAGS was color for 3 years and Barney left Mayberry when Don Knotts signed a movie contract in 1965! Also, a technical point to mention: 8 and 10 were colorized by CBS in 2017, so either answer is correct!
