Can you name all these British Invasion bands of the 1960s?

They weren't as big as the Beatles, but they were big!

Everybody knows the Beatles. But they were not the only Brits to rock America in the 1960s. The Fab Four were merely the vanguard of the British Invasion.

Dozens of groups from the U.K. scored big hits — and reshaped rock 'n' roll as we know it. Some of these bands continued to rock stadiums for decades, while others were more Sixties phenomena.

Let's see if you can recognize these groups. Read the hints and examine the album covers for clues!

  1. They were one of the biggest of their generation — almost as big as Big Ben.

  2. You really got this one.

  3. Eric did not seem too thrilled to have a hit.

  4. The drummer got top billing in this band.

  5. "She's Not There" but these five guys are.

  6. Jeff Beck had replaced Eric Clapton by this point, when the band was having its 'Rave Up'.

  7. "Stop Stop Stop." You could find these nice boys at the "Bus Stop."

  8. They were such a "Wild Thing" they were in a cave!

  9. You could find them hanging in "Itchycoo Park."

  10. These what's-their-names did "Do Wah Diddy Diddy."
    Image: Ascot Records
  11. They first ap-"pier"-ed with the hit "Go Now."

  12. Perhaps you first "checked" out Steve Winwood in this band.

12/12. Right in my wheelhouse! Happy to see they didn't make the mistake of calling them Manfred Mann "and His Earth Band."

11/12. Missed #6. I thought it was Cream instead of The Yardbirds. The other 11 were easy for this '60s-loving guy!

Any Herman's Hermits fans who haven't heard a recent interview with Peter Noone on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast need to check it out. He's full of great stories.

12/12. I've had all of these records since I was a kid and they came out. That whole British Invasion era, including some of the American bands already mentioned (Beach Boys, Revere/Raiders, Beau Brummels, Byrds, Turtles, Monkees...of course Bob Dylan...) and the Motown stuff from that time - it's still my "go to" era for having a great time. And nothing still sounds better than the sound jumping off a 45 on the turntable.

For all the people here not familiar with Small Faces. Go to YouTube and check out the tune Afterglow. One of the best songs of the decade.

Check out the PR&TR albums on Youtube, "Hard and Heavy (With Marshmallow)" and "Alias Pink Puzz", both from 1969. They are super excellent!
