If Kirk stood perfectly still long enough, he would eventually appear to the crew.
That's why the captain's quarters has mirrors on the ceiling over the bed. It's not some freaky "adult motel" thing, it's just that Kirk *really* likes looking at himself.
This speeded up concept was used in a Wild Wild West episode called "The Night of the Burning Diamond" in 1966. I view it last night by coincidence.
Robert Conrad in the audio intro mentions Star Trek using the concept later. Gene L Coon Star Trek Producer and writer produced that episode for the Wild Wild West.
