Were these classic blockbusters released on Memorial Day Weekend or not?

Do you remember the weekend these movies from the '70s and '80s hit theaters?

Starting with the dawn of the modern blockbuster in the 1970s, every summer weekend became a coveted spot for studios to release their films — with Memorial Day weekend being one of the most lucrative.

Here are some of our favorite blockbuster films from that era. Can you guess which ones came out at the end of May and which ones didn't?

  1. Did the original Star Wars come out right before Memorial Day weekend in 1977?
  2. Did Jaws come out on Memorial Day weekend in 1975?
  3. Did Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom come out on Memorial Day weekend in 1984?
  4. Did American Graffiti come out on Memorial Day weekend in 1973?
  5. Did Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back also come out right before Memorial Day weekend in 1980?
  6. Did Alien come out on Memorial Day weekend in 1979?
  7. Did Grease come out Memorial Day weekend in 1978?
  8. Did Smokey and the Bandit come out on Memorial Day weekend in 1977?
  9. Did Raiders of the Lost Ark come out on Memorial Day weekend in 1981?
  10. Did The Terminator come out on Memorial Day weekend in 1984?
  11. Did The Shining come out on Memorial Day weekend in 1980?
  12. Did The Goonies come out on Memorial Day weekend in 1985?

Were these classic blockbusters released on Memorial Day Weekend or not?

All I know was that all 3 of the original Star Wars movies opened on a Wednesday in May because I was at all three openings.

I had forgotten that Star Wars and Smokey and the Bandit both came out on the same weekend. One seems as fresh as ever while the other looks like ancient history.

If they were to re-release Block Buster movies, I would probably go and see "Jaws" again.

Mine would be The Shining. That movie still gives me the willies when I watch it.

No, thank you--I do not like to be scared. Now, having said that, if somebody can explain why I actually read the book...

Not happy with 8 out of 12, but I was sure The Terminator came out for that big holiday weekend.

The first three Star Wars films--A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi--all came out in late May. One of the reasons for this (supposedly) was that George Lucas' birthday is in late May. The rest of these films came out when I was in either grade school or high school and i wasn't exactly paying attention to release dates. (American Graffitti will be 50 in two years--oh, Lord, I was eleven when it first came out!)

What's this new hope you are talking about? It will always be just Stars Wars to me.

Watch the opening titles--at the top of the crawl explaining what's already happened, it says Chapter Four--A New Hope. We got parts 4,5 and 6 followed by parts 1,2 and 3 and finally 7,8 and 9. Very interesting...

Well, got half, but of course it was pretty much random guessing on my part.

I’m amazed at my 10/12, most of them guesses. Who remembers the specific weekend a movie came out 40 years ago?

7/12 I knew #1, #2, and #5. All the rest were guesses.
