Batman creator William Dozier said that Burt Ward was everything that Robin should be
Ward was the perfect Boy Wonder.
Sometimes the stars align, and an actor wins the role they were born to play. For Burt Ward, it seemed that his destiny was playing Robin, the Boy Wonder.
Ward starred as one half of the dynamic duo in the popular 1960s superhero series. During an interview with The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ward revealed that early on in the series, he had a very important conversation with series creator William Dozier.
“He [Dozier] said, ‘If there really was a Robin, you would be it,’” said Ward. “’You personally are what we think Robin should be. We only want you to do two things; all we’re asking you to do on this show is to be enthusiastic...and we want you to be yourself,” Ward said.
Batman had the rare ability to capture viewers of all ages, young and old, and Ward was proud of the show's extensive reach. “The show appealed to a very broad audience,” said Ward. For kids, it was hero worship...for the adults, it was the nostalgia of the comic book, and for the teenagers and the college kids, it was all those double meanings and insinuations that we used to get yelled at by the censors each week. As a result, when you meet these people, it’s not casual; you can just feel the intensity and see what is going on inside of them.”
Despite his talent for acting, Ward never seemed to desire the life of a Hollywood bigshot. Perhaps it was this authenticity that made him such a perfect choice for the role of Robin.
“I never lived like a television star and I don’t now,” Ward said during an interview with the News and Record. I guess I’m pretty down to Earth. I was stereotyped after the show, but it really didn’t matter that much to me. I’ve always been kind of happy-go-lucky, and my attitude is, if it’s there, fine; if it’s not, that’s okay too.”
