Did you know that Dick Van Dyke set a record with his Emmy win?
Van Dyke keeps on making history
If only we all aged as gracefully as Dick Van Dyke. The guy has entertained us for what seems like forever. He's contributed to the culture in each of the past eight decades. From Bye, Bye Birdie to The Dick Van Dyke Show and Mary Poppins, straight through to Diagnosis Murder and beyond, Van Dyke has never stopped building an incredible legacy filled with laughter and heart.
While it's hard to quantify the impact Van Dyke has had on the entertainment industry, one metric sees him as a record-setter. In 2024, Dick Van Dyke became the oldest Daytime Emmy winner for his role on Peacock's "Days of Our Lives." He was 98 at the awards ceremony, making this a historic win.
The actor was honored as a guest performer in a daytime drama series. He played amnesiac Timothy Robicheaux on the streaming service's long-running soap opera.
"I don't believe this," said Van Dyke, according to the Associated Press. "I feel like a spy from nighttime television.
"I'm 98 years old. Can you believe it? This really tops off a lifetime of 80 years in the business. If I had known I would have lived this long I would've taken better care of myself."
The Emmy win was Van Dyke's sixth, as he was also awarded for his work on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Van Dyke and Company, and 1984's CBS Library: The Wrong Way Kid.
Van Dyke is also a one-time Grammy and Tony recipient, with awards for the Mary Poppins soundtrack and his performance onstage in Bye Bye Birdie.
