Filming Harry-O in San Diego came with a unique set of challenges for series star, David Janssen
"The biggest private detective work I do every day is trying to figure out our scripts," said the actor.

While Los Angeles has long been considered the destination for filming, several films and television shows have benefited greatly from working outside the city. On the one hand, filming in various locations allows for a change of scenery, a refreshing change for both the actors starring in the series as well as the viewers watching at home.
But in the cast of a television series like Harry-O, the shift wasn't without its issues, as David Janssen would willingly attest to.
Janssen starred in the detective series for two seasons. The beginning of the show's first season was shot in San Diego, where Harry-O is set. The move separated the filming cast and crew from their writers, who remained in Hollywood.
"We had a meeting a few days ago, and everybody agreed that a six-page scene we have here needed to be rewritten," said Janssen during an interview with the North Bay Nugget during filming of the show's first season. "Well, we're ready to shoot that scene now, and the new pages haven't gotten here yet. Maybe if I were in Los Angeles, I could find out who was responsible. Maybe not - they're all pretty good at covering up. But at least up there, I could put some pressure on the writers. Here I'm just stuck."
It was an issue that put a strain on the filming schedule, as well as the patience of both cast and crew. "The biggest private detective work I do every day is trying to figure out our scripts," said Janssen.
The series later moved filming back to Los Angeles, which ultimately seemed to be a wise move to Janssen.
"What really matters are the scripts," said the actor. "If we have good scripts, the setting can be anywhere. And it really doesn't matter to me very much where I'm working."
