MeTV brings The Wizard of Oz back to broadcast TV for the first time in almost 30 years!
The beloved cinematic masterpiece airs exclusively this October on MeTV as part of MeTV’s Halloween BOO-Nanza
MeTV has secured the exclusive broadcast rights to air MGM’s timeless classic The Wizard of Oz in October 2026, marking the film’s first appearance on free broadcast television since its final CBS telecast on May 9, 1998, ending a nearly three-decade absence from the medium that made it a household tradition.
The return to broadcast television comes on the heels of the film’s massive resurgence in the cultural zeitgeist, with special cinematic screenings of the original film in unique event venues, and popular new film franchise iterations inspired by the timeless characters of Oz.
"The Wizard of Oz is more than a movie, it is a shared American experience that was defined by the annual tradition of gathering around the television set," said Neal Sabin, Vice-Chairman of Weigel Broadcasting. "We are thrilled to bring the film back to broadcast television this October on MeTV. It will be presented without any edits and will be surrounded by surprises we will announce later, making the film the centerpiece of our expanded annual MeTV Halloween BOO-Nanza programming event."
The film will air multiple times in prime time and throughout October as part of MeTV’s Halloween BOO-Nanza, a month-long celebration of classic horror, sci-fi and family-friendly favorite films, including a marquee Saturday night showcase hosted by Svengoolie and The Sven Squad.
