Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams mended their friendship fifteen years after Laverne & Shirley ended
"We got together at my house and had the conversation I wished I'd been able to have fifteen years earlier," wrote Marshall.
Too much time can often be considered a bad thing. But sometimes, some extra time between friends allows them to understand just how much they need one another.
Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams were both wonderful actors, but the friendship built on Laverne & Shirley was grounded in a very real closeness between the pair in real life. Their friendship was ruptured after Williams departed Laverne & Shirley, according to Marshall's book, My Mother Was Nuts: A Memoir.
However, Marshall explained that the distance hadn't hardened her soft feelings for Williams. When fellow Laverne & Shirley costar David Lander told Marshall that Williams had separated from her husband Bill Hudson, Marshall saw it as an opportunity to comfort a friend in her time of need. "I was eager to reconnect," wrote Marshall. "I had seen Cindy once or twice over the years at TV Land specials, but these occasions were more professional than personal, always fleeting and in crowds. We never sat down and talked about the unfortunate way we had parted on Laverne & Shirley, or how much I had missed her over the years. I still considered her a friend. We had shared too much for me to consider her anything but a special person in my life.
At the time, Williams was working on the stage. But later, she and Marshall were able to reconnect, years after Laverne & Shirley had ended, to finally clear the air.
"After Cindy finished her play, we got together at my house and had the conversation I wished I'd been able to have fifteen years earlier," wrote Marshall. The two discussed their differences and were able to mend their friendship completely.
