R.I.P. Gene Hackman: Oscar-winning ''French Connection''' actor

"I was going to make espresso!"

The Everett Collection

Hollywood legend Gene Hackman was found dead along with his wife in their New Mexico home on Wednesday, February 26th, 2025. The actor was 95 years old.

Hackman is best remembered for some of the most iconic performances of the 1970s and '80s.

As Lex Luthor, Hackman dared to defy the Man of Steel in Superman and its sequels. His presence elevated the movie from its comic book, adding gravitas and pathos to the source material. His archvillain would define the archetype for decades.

Gene Hackman is a two-time Oscar winner, first for The French Connection, in which he played New York cop Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle. He won again in 1992 for Unforgiven, the Clint Eastwood-directed Western in which Hackman played Little Bill Daggett.

He was an acting revolutionary, taking character actor roles and giving them leading man performances. While Hackman may not have had the movie star appeal of many of his Hollywood peers, his approach to acting set him apart from many matinee idols.

At his time of death, Hackman was retired from acting for over twenty years.

"You go through stages in your career that you feel very good about yourself. Then you feel awful, like, 'Why didn't I choose something else?'" Hackman told GQ magazine in 2011. "But overall I'm pretty satisfied that I made the right choice when I decided to be an actor. I was lucky to find a few things that I could do well as an actor and that I could look at and say, 'Yeah, that's all right.'"

Before his final appearance in 2004's Welcome to Mooseport, Hackman acted in over 80 films over four decades.

Hackman might be best remembered as a dramatic actor, but his comedy chops were incredible as well.

In Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, Hackman is nearly unrecognizable in an uncredited appearance as Blindman, the old hermit. He ad-libbed his hilarious final line.

"I was going to make espresso!"

This is sadder than most celebrity deaths. It took them 9 days to find his body and his wife's in their own home. That tells me they were recluses. You'd think a friend would check up on them sooner.

You mentioned the uncredited clip in "Young Frankenstein". I would've loved to have seen that "clip" of his hilarious ad-libbed line "here" since you brought it up. (Yeah that's $$). > ANYWAY > In "Poseidon Adventure" he played the pastor/priest, in "The Quick and the Dead" he was the very ruthless killer. He was awesome. Prayers to your family.

I had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with Gene back in 1983 at a private function where a dear friend of mine... and his... introduced us. He was such a gracious and pleasant man who I always respected. Rest in peace.

NOW SHOWING!
26TH BIG WEEK!

"The Poseidon Adventure"

The FIRST and STILL GREATEST of the Disaster genre.

Went to see it every Saturday afternoon at the State Theatre in Chicago for 26 consecutive weeks.

"You see, Rev. Scott, in the water, I am a very skinny lady....ARRGHHHHH!" -- Shelly Winters, as Belle Rosen in her Academy Award-nominated for Best Supporting Actress role

RIP, Gene Hackman, Shelly Winters, Ernest Borgnine, Stella Stevens, Jack Albertson, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall and, of course, The Master of Disaster, Irwin Allen.

Thanks for bringing up all those special stars. Who was the young boy who pissed off Borgnine all the time with his memory and knowledge that the Captain might have told him in a half hour meeting. It is a favorite of mine.
Sad the main part of the cast are nonlonger with us.

I thought he was great in "The Poseidon Adventure" movie 1972. That movie had lots of other stars in it but he was the best.

Just saw him again on A Bridge to Far great actor will be missed.
I liked the way that character pronounced General with a Hard G while maintaining a snow-encrusted mustache after hours indoors.

RIP. My two favorite Hackman movies were Hoosiers and Mississippi Burning. Was also once considered for the role of Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch.
