Though Blanche Devereaux wasn’t the only character Rue McClanahan played, she certainly seemed to be the actor’s favorite.

McClanahan starred as Blanche on The Golden Girls for roughly seven years, and even continued to play the character on the spin-off program, The Golden Palace.

In 1987, McClanahan starred in the television film Little Match Girl, based on the 1845 short story by Hans Christian Andersen.

“She’s a nice woman,” McClanahan said of her character, Frances Dutton, during an interview with the LA Times-Washington Post Service. “She’s not a wimp. I found it very difficult to walk that middle ground when you’re not playing someone flamboyant. It’s very difficult to play someone straight. I much prefer playing someone self-centered.”

McClanahan was interested in playing a character that wasn’t perfect, but she took issue with a character that was incapable of changing. She appreciated that as the series went on, Blanche grew and developed as a person.

“I’ve asked for so many things, and I’ve gotten just about all of them,” said McClanahan during an interview with the Herald-Times-Reporter. “Every now and then, Blanche gets to be a little less shallow. I want her to do more things that aren’t based on her libido.”
