I didn't care for Jerry Van Dyke when he was playing these "sad sack," woe-is-me type of characters.
He played a similar type guy on an episode of Gomer Pyle USMC.
He was much funnier(to me) when he was just a clumsy, goofy guy like on Coach, or playing the travel agent manager who goes kind of nuts on an episode of Newhart.
