Hungarian immigrant turned Hollywood stuntman Janos Prohaska created the Horta and operated it from inside. Janos created the creature first for an episode of The Outer Limits titled "The Probe." He later modified it for Star Trek.
During filming of this episode, William Shatner received word that his father had unexpectedly passed away. Leonard Nimoy was very supportive of Shatner during this sad time.
This episode was a rare case where the writer credited on screen, Gene Coon, was the only one to work on the script.
Writer David Gerrold ("The Trouble with Tribbles") felt that Gene Coon was the "heart and soul of Star Trek."
