After a spinoff involving Lenny and Squiggy was scrapped, Cindy Willaims said it was probably for the best
The Laverne & Shirley duo were going to get their own show!
Look, the title is Laverne & Shirley, but they're not the only two best friends in this series. The ladies were often accompanied by Lenny and Squiggy, played by Michael McKean and David Lander, respectively.
During an interview with the News Tribune, Cindy Williams, who played Shirley Feeney, described the beginnings of Laverne & Shirley as a whirlwind of sorts.
"It all happened so fast," said Williams during an interview with The News Tribune. "We had just four days to prepare. It's just thrown together - slap-dash. But we have come a long way since we put the first show together."
However, while plenty of hard work goes into a sitcom's development and production, Williams revealed that the main draw of her show lay in its simplicity.
"We have two characters who are equally sympathetic people," said Williams. "They have simple problems, in simple situations. There are no heavy messages. The show sometimes is very unpolished."
Before she began working on Laverne & Shirley, Williams said that her career was in a "dry spell."
"I really had nothing promising," said Williams. "And my manager and agent convinced me [to do the series]...I just felt it would be wrong for me to turn down the kind of money they agreed to give me - especially since I wasn't doing anything."
Of course, Williams was grateful for the decision after the show became an instant hit. In fact, the show became so successful, that there were originally plans to give Lenny and Squiggy their own spinoff. This idea was later scrapped, which Williams believed was for the best.
"I'm glad," said the Laverne & Shirley actor. "If ABC did spin them off, it would weaken our show. Then they would have two weak shows because we depend upon each other. They deserve their own show. They'll have it, soon, but not next season."
