Barbara Billingsley called Tony Dow ''an equal'' when they were costars on Leave It to Beaver

It was the family tree forged in the stars.

NBC/Universal

Although they played mother and son on-screen, Barbara Billingsley and Tony Dow regarded each other with the respect and appreciation that only professional actors can muster.

The two became famous when they played June and Wally Cleaver of Leave It to Beaver. The series itself was a hit - but it wasn't the last time that the two actors would work together.

According to an interview with The Kansas City Star, the two starred in Come Blow Your Horn on the stage. While the opportunity gave Billingsley and Dow an opportunity to make some new memories, they also took time to reminisce about the good old days filming Leave It to Beaver. At that time, Dow was still an adolescent.

"He was a coworker - a child, certainly, but someone I worked with every day," said Billingsley of Dow. "We were friends, equals."

While Billingsley served as America's mother, she wouldn't think of taking that space in Dow's life. "Besides, his own mother was always on the set, and she and I became good friends over the years," she said.

Dow agreed and even revealed that his real-life mother quickly befriended Billingsley as well. "Mom lives on Catalina Island, and when she goes stir-crazy, she calls up Barbara on the mainland."

Dow had nothing but nice things to say about his on-screen mother. "She is just an incredibly sweet woman who almost never loses her temper," said Dow of Billingsley.
