Co-creator of Emergency! Robert Cinader loved a good challenge

Cinader wouldn't back down from a fight, even if that fight was with Archie Bunker.

Going up against a show like All in the Family is a daunting task for any television series. But for a series like Emergency! where the characters dealt with life-or-death situations on a daily basis, facing off with Archie Bunker seemed like pretty small potatoes.

According to an interview with The Deseret News, Emergency! Co-creator Robert A. Cinader revealed that his series came out on top in the ratings, thanks to the fervour and dedication of the show's younger fanbase.

"On the network, Emergency! was thrown against All in the Family, but astounded the industry by scoring respectable ratings against the No. 1 show," said Cinader during the 1973 interview. "I figured the 16-year-olds would not dig Archie, so I directed Emergency at those below that age. We got both older and younger viewers, however."

Far from nerve-wracked, Cinader enjoyed the idea of facing off against the sitcom giant.

"I relish this because I am a hero if our programs go up in the ratings," said Cinader.

Cinader was proud of the success his series had achieved and was confident in his abilities as a creator.

"No television show has universal appeal," said Cinader during an interview with the Kentucky New Era. "Even All in the Family doesn't appeal to everyone. You look for the areas where it doesn't appeal. And that's to the action-oriented kids. You design a show around kids."
