Farrah Fawcett wanted her Charlie's Angels character to have more emotional storylines
Jill Monroe wasn't just a pretty face, and neither was Farrah Fawcett.
Farrah Fawcett understood that, as a beautiful woman, she was destined to be underestimated by the people in her life. Beauty is often seen as an asset to many. But in Hollywood, being too beautiful can often be a death sentence for some actors.
Farrah Fawcett, widely regarded for her beauty, dealt with a rocky start early on in her career. In a 1977 interview, Fawcett confessed that she was widely overlooked for “regular” roles due to her extraordinary beauty.
I got so tired of people saying I was ‘too pretty’ to play a waitress, or telling me, ‘No one will believe your husband left you,” said Fawcett during an interview with the San Antonio Express News. These might seem like champagne problems, though Fawcett admitted that she had felt that the restrictions felt detrimental, especially to a young actor just starting out. “I know I am limited as an actress, and there are things that I cannot do,” said Fawcett.
Luckily, Fawcett found worldwide success when she was cast as Jill Munroe in the popular series, Charlie’s Angels. “Thank goodness we’re not just decorating the background,” said the actor.
Never one to coast on her good looks, Fawcett used the series as an opportunity to show that she had some serious acting chops, frequently campaigning for more emotional storylines.
“I want them to start showing she’s [Jill] had some hard knocks, too, and cries, and is sad,” said the actor.
