Happy Birthday to Tony Bennett
From Danny Thomas to Lady Gaga — Tony Bennett has had an incredible, unprecedented string of collaborations over his 65-year career. Today, the crooner celebrates his 89th birthday, and he's still out there on the road, singing standards alongside pop stars.
The Italian-American (born Anthony Benedetto) cut his first demo in 1950 and didn't wait long to hit the top of the charts, landing at number one in 1951 with "Because of You" for Columbia Records.
Bennett has a connection to MeTV, too. In 1959, he appeared in an episode of Make Room for Daddy. Naturally, he sung. Check out a clip.
Bennett was reaching new peaks at the time, cutting classic albums with Count Basie and his orchestra, including 1959's seminal Basie Swings, Bennett Sings. Do yourself a favor and listen to "Life Is a Song" today. Do you have a favorite Tony Bennett song or album?
Catch Make Room for Daddy weekdays at 5:30AM | 4:30C during the Summer of MeTV.
