Peter Barton was worried that he'd only been cast in The Powers of Matthew Star for his good looks
The actor was worried he hadn't won the role for the right reasons.
As a young actor, Peter Barton got his beginnings in modeling before he pursued a television career. Originally, Barton didn't have any interest in becoming an actor, as he told Newsday. Just before he became a model, as he told Newsday during an interview, he had plans to become a pharmacist. "If you'd asked what the last thing I'd ever be doing in my life was, it would have been acting," he said.
Even after Barton won the starring role in The Powers of Matthew Star, he was self-conscious of his new-found fame and worried that he was only given the role because of his good looks. "I tried hard to say to myself that it wasn't just because of my face," he said. "I'd learn how to be a better actor. I'd be as good on the inside as I was on the outside."
Luckily, Matthew Star wasn't too far off from being Peter Barton, and the actor found a kindred spirit in the character.
"I really don't consider Matthew Star a character," Barton said. "It all hits so close to home that I basically end up playing myself."
Despite Star's superhuman abilities, Barton related to the adolescent trials that Star went through. "I'm still going through phases myself," he said. "I'm still wondering who I am and what it's all about."
Luckily, the television set was a place where Barton was comfortable, even eager to go to work, and it made his acting all the better. "Matthew Star was the first show I've had fun on," he said. "Before, I was withdrawn. I didn't let myself get involved."
