Peter Barton said that playing Matthew Star was like playing himself
"I really don't consider Matthew Star a character," said Barton.
When does a role become more than a fictional character? Is it after the role has made you a star, or perhaps when you've spent enough time taking on a new personality on set? At any rate, a true friendship between an actor and the character they play develops at its own pace, depending on the actor.
At first glance, it can be difficult to picture Peter Barton connecting on a fundamental level to a role like Matthew Star. While Barton was a dedicated actor, he had a relatively normal upbringing and wasn't even especially interested in becoming an actor.
Meanwhile, the title character of The Powers of Matthew Star attempts to live a relatively normal life, despite constantly struggling between two worlds. On top of this, he is always attempting to save his loved ones and properly master his powers.
Still, Barton looked at Matthew Star and saw something he could recognize so deeply that it made him a better actor.
"I really don't consider Matthew Star a character," said Barton during an interview with Newsday. "It all hits so close to home I basically end up playing myself."
Despite his newfound fame and lavish surroundings, Barton never lost his drive to live a relatively normal life, something he and Matthew had in common.
"I prefer sitting in a coffee shop having scrambled eggs and cottage cheese and talking to people," he said. "I like that kind of atmosphere, that kind of chemistry."
