A quiz about Shelley Duvall

Paying tribute to one of the greats.

 The Everett Collection

Has there ever been an actress more able to convey emotion with her giant eyes than Shelley Duvall?

She was a raw nerve and a conduit for humanity in everything she did. Duvall elevated even the smallest role and was the most fascinating thing whenever she was onscreen.

Let's pay tribute to a wonderful actress and a legendary career. We'll ask a question about Duvall and her career, and you pick the correct answer.

By the way, we haven't forgotten The Shining. So please don't accuse us of forgetting The Shining. It's a good movie, but Duvall's career was full of good movies, and her legacy deserves to be intertwined with all of them. She should not be reduced to Wendy Torrance every time.

  1. This was Duvall's first movie, about an introverted loner living in the bowels of the Astrodome as he plots to develop - with the aid of a mysterious guardian angel - a pair of wings that will help him fly.
  2. Duvall continued her collaboration with Robert Altman in her second picture, co-starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie.
  3. In this movie about numerous interrelated people preparing for a political convention, Duvall starred as L.A. Joan.
  4. This movie, which featured a small role for Shelley Duvall, also featured small roles for Paul Simon and Christoper Walken.
  5. Can you tell us what year saw the release of Popeye, starring Duvall as Olive Oyl?
  6. Monty Python's Terry Gilliam directed this movie which starred Duvall as Dame Pansy
  7. "Hello, I'm Shelley Duvall," she said at the beginning of this show she starred in, produced, and hosted.
  8. This 1984 Tim Burton short starred Shelley Duvall as Susan Frankenstein.
  9. Which version of The Twilight Zone featured Duvall in an episode?
  10. Which Steve Martin vehicle starred Duvall as a character named Dixie?

My daughters & I watched "Popeye" yesterday, in tribute. It turns out that she made 7 movies with Robert Altman! Brewster McCloud; McCabe & Mrs. Miller; Thieves Like Us; Nashville; Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson; 3 Women; and Popeye.

She was really good playing Olive Oyl. Truth be told, I can't think of anyone who wasn't well-cast in that movie.

Yes. I remember this movie that the late Robin Williams played good as Popeye the Sailor and it was a true classic and of course cast was great.
And it was a stroke of genius to cast both Popeye and his father Poopdeck Pappy with two guys best-known (at the time) for playing aliens living with regular earth people.

7/10, but what amazes me, how MeTV left out the Shinning with Jack Nicholson as one of the lead Actors.

“The Shinning” was the “Simpsons” spoof of “The Shining”. There were actual moments from that episode that I thought were scarier than anything in the actual movie.

They specifically said in the intro material (that apparently few people read) that they left out "The Shining" on purpose.

That title came because Willie was the caretaker! I believe that's the one where the Scotsman was killed in ALL 3 segments!

The plot and Duvall's and Sissy Spacek's acting in 3 WOMEN (1977) fasinated me!

I loved Faerie Tale Theatre; it's proably on YouTube, but I wish some channel would stream it again.

Been watching it on Youtube this whole weekend. It might be cheesy by today's standards in terms of special effects and sets, but I, a middle aged man, still find the show as charming as it was when I first saw it in the 80s.

5/10. I wasn’t a huge fan but I thought she added an interesting quirkiness to the films she was in. She had beautiful, big eyes and was so gawky, and had an almost otherworldly presence to me. R.I.P. Shelly.

Agree 100% I couldn't have said it better!
