Trivia. Scriptwriter and noted science-fiction author Norman Spinrad envisioned actor Robert Ryan in the Commodore Decker role.

Original title "The Planet Eater."

Debut of the redesigned engineering set. There were now dilithium crystal storage units on the center of the deck with recycled Horta eggs as part of it. A second level with a ladder was also added to the set. A short spur hallway now was the entrance to engineering.

Debut of Captain Kirk's second season wraparound green tunic.

An AMT model kit of the Enterprise was used as the damaged Constellation.

Norman Spinrad was displeased with the planet killer design. He envisioned something bristling with weapons. I have to respectfully disagree with NS. His concept seems more of a hackneyed to me. The unique looking design appeared more mysterious and alien to me.

This episode was nominated for a Hugo Award for "Best Dramatic Presentation (1968).
The average episode usually 20 to 30 new remastered visual effects shots. TDM needed 105.

In the classic military film The Caine Mutiny, Humphrey Bogart's mentally unstable character of Captain Queeg would hold ball-bearings in his hand and move them around nervously ball-bearings. Commodore Decker does the same thing but with cassette tapes.

James Doohan listed TDM as one of his favorite episodes. He felt the complex, driven Decker role was very interesting and that William Windom was terrific. He also enjoyed the science background involved.

Captain Matt Decker is the father of Captain Will Decker in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

D.C. Fontana was not fond of TDM. She felt that while the concept was quite intriguing, having the planet killer devoid of any personality and just a mindless machine did not make it an interesting enemy.

10/10. Kirk: Where's your Crew? Decker: I had to beam them down, we were dead weapons useless.

Yep, one of the best.

9/10 great episode. The Doomsday machine looked like a giant slug, so some salt probably would have taken care of it. William Windom did a good job as Decker. In Star trek the Motion Picture, Decker's son is The Captain that Kirk replaces.

7/10. That's bad for me. This episode is also one of the better episodes. I loved the exchange on the bridge between Spock & Decker. McCoy shoulda confined Decker to sick bay as soon as he beamed aboard the Enterprise for a complete medical.

10/10 one of the best episodes!

I believe that when Commodore Decker was in command of the Enterprise, it was the longest sustained combat action for the series. Fire!.......... hard about, give me some distance, Fire!......Fire!............

It's ironic that Decker's crippled Constellation not only saved the Enterprise (thanks to Scotty's repairs) from the Machine's tractor beam, but she was ultimately the instrument of the Doomsday Machine destruction.
Kudos to the tragic Decker, Kirk, Scotty and the Heroic Starship Constellation, she was a good Ship!

The original doomsday machine was kinda cheesy-looking. 🤭

10/10. One of Trek's finest episodes and a favorite of mine.
DYK? In the original script Commodore Decker survives and doesn't perish piloting the shuttlecraft into the DM.

As a matter of fact, I did know that from the old Star Trek books where James Blish edited them. Some of his edits took a little too much off though, changing the outcome, as in the case of Decker surviving the DM( according to the book rewrite.
