No , to summarize and stop at your 1st comment, The script was retconned ,removing the CC character. New storyline, new characters "Complete,done,finished." Could ofs, would ofs, and should of's, make no sense that they are going to spend that amount of time or effort on a workaround for one character. The device was there they used it and moved on with the series. Plain and most importantly at the time " simple". You are way overthinking a simple process they used, and most importantly it doesn't change what has been done.
