As an actor, you need to be prepared to play any sort of character, whether they be tame or outlandish. Luckily for Bernie Kopell, the character he became famous for portraying was fairly in line with his own personality.

Of course, Kopell is known as Dr. Adam Bricker of The Love Boat. During an interview with The Birmingham News, Kopell said that he shared a number of traits with Doc, save for a few key ones.

"I suppose he's a lot like me, except for a couple of things," said Kopell. "He's jaded, and while he's pretty much of a lover, he doesn't ever really fall in love. That's the way I was...He's been married four times and doesn't ever expect to get married again. That's the way I used to be."

Despite his claims that he's never been much of a lover, Kopell was incredibly affectionate toward his Love Boat costars, speaking very highly of them.

"This is a great series because of the cast if nothing else," said Kopell. "Working with Gavin McLeod is an experience. We worked in McHale's Navy before and on the set then we used to have some very long talks about what we wanted to do in the business. We communicate well."

But what truly made a series like The Love Boat so unforgettable were the stories told throughout episodes.

"The stories are all about people - and their great fascination for - and with love, all different kinds of love," said the actor. "There's the love of husbands for wives, lovers for mistresses, parents for children, grandmothers for grandfathers, songstresses for accompanists, doctors for patients, and pets for their masters. There might be enough love available to keep the show on the air until the year 2000."
