Who is Rock 'n' Roll's greatest drummer?

Drumroll please!

 The Everett Collection

"Bang," "crash," and "thwonk"...

These are just some of the many sounds rock drummers contribute to their medium. The best, though, elevate the genre even further, gently supporting the rest of the act until it's time for the thunder to shine.

But... Here's the thing. We want to know your opinions. Who do you think is the greatest drummer in rock music history? Is it someone old? Someone new? Someone... right in the middle between old and new? We'll let you decide. Just expect to back up your opinions in the comments section, especially if you select "Other."

We want to hear from you!

(Rock not your thing? We've thrown in two drummers from outside that genre who fit into the MeTV world!)

  1. Who is rock music's greatest drummer?

Who is Rock 'n' Roll's greatest drummer?

Your Result...

Buddy Rich hands down. Of course I'm a drummer know what I'm talking about. And he was primarily a jazz drummer. They should have put Karen Carpenter on this list too, because she was really good.

Peart is,indeed, very talented as self taught. But there are some really talented musicians: Levon Helm,Rich, and Krupa were great jazz guys.Charlie Watts was a great "time" drummer steady beat and also had jazz influence.

Buddy was kinda rocknroll. Mostly big band 'jazz'.. But he and Gene Krupa...supreme.

30%. Oh freaking well. Bonham without question. Most underrated... Ringo.

I picked Benny Benjamin, 0% similar. I’m really surprised the Rush drummer is leading!

What band did B.B. drum for?
Tresix MarioNYC 15 hours ago
It said he was a session drummer at Motown.

My oversight. I didn't notice

Here's some great drummers who were not on the list: Joey Kramer (Aerosmith) Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick) Sandy West (The Runaways)

Many consider Hal Blaine the greatest, although he was a session drummer (among the famed "Wrecking Crew") and not a member of any one group.

Neil Peart of Rush. End of story. Move on.

Question: Do you pronounce "Peart"
1) Peert
2) Pert
3) Part

2) Pert. Remember If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
MarioNYC nd1irish 1 day ago
I pronounce it "Pert" also.
Rob MarioNYC 8 hours ago
I’m going with #2.
MarioNYC Rob 8 hours ago
Me too: "Pert"
I asked because years ago I read an article about Rush. It said Peart "rhymes with 'heart' ".
And on a radio program, they pronounced it "Peert".
People speak English differently, so I thought I would survey the Neil Peart fans here.

0% similar.
Took me about 1 second to click on Stewart Copeland of The Police.
The nuances he added to the music and his originality when he played was just phenomenal.
Watch ANY video of Stewart Copeland playing... live, recorded, early years, recent... doesn't matter. He's the best, IMO. Stewart wouldn't say that, so I had to. Stewart would just say that he "bangs on s**t."
No, no he doesn't. He adds a whole lot more to it than that.

So true ! The police would have been just another band without Copeland and whatever Sting says he knows Copeland was the heart of that band !
Zip UGA2021 1 day ago
Not to downplay Sting's talents with songwriting, playing bass, and singing; while Andy was in another world with his guitar playing(Stewart had once said that he marveled at the sounds that Andy was able to come up with with his guitar), but yeah, I can't imagine The Police's sound without Stewart's drumming.

Once again Zip, I think your right on with your assessment.

Why is Carl Palmer (from Emerson Lake & Palmer) not on the list!? FIRST!!!
Then comes Neil Peart and Buddy Rich.
UGA2021 SpaceMan626 1 day ago
Buddy Rich should NOT be on this list !! He was a JAZZ drummer and it’s an insult to the rock guys to have him here ! Then Billy Cobham should be on the list !
Tresix UGA2021 24 hours ago
Gene Krupa is there too.
Bapa1 UGA2021 19 hours ago
I was going to say that also, Cobham was great.
