Three con artists have been swindling businessmen from out of town by posing as a prostitute and two policemen. The detectives set a trap as Gannon pretends to be a manufacturer from Lincoln, Nebraska.

Reed and Malloy have a gun pulled on them after stopping a car that turns out to be stolen, but the contents of the trunk link the two suspects to an even more sinister crime. Afterward, a recently widowed father and his teenage daughter report that their home has just been toilet papered, which ends up being a prelude for a much more serious incident.

Officer Reed, who is an optimist and still has faith in the human race, is subjected to ridicule from Officer Wells after he is swindled twice. On patrol, he and Malloy come to the aid of a woman whose baby has been kidnapped by a heavily armed man seeking a large ransom. Afterward, wells once again questions Reed's judgment during the search for an intoxicated sniper at large.

Beaver has Gilbert over to spend the night but after they watch a gangster movie things get out of hand. A suspicious car has just pulled up to the front of the house with two strange characters sitting inside, and they just happen to be Lumpy and Bill, dressed for a masquerade party. Not knowing this, Beaver calls the police and Lumpy and Bill are arrested.

At a fire, the paramedics rescue a pregnant woman and Johnny injures his shoulder. After going into labor, the guilt-ridden mother is determined to abandon her deformed baby. Dr. Morton treats Johnny and gives him a bad time about his physical condition, sending Johnny on a fitness kick. Dr. Early treats an electrocuted child whose mother is on drugs. The son of a stabbing victim is more determined to shoot the assailant than get his father to the hospital. Roy and Johnny rescue a hang glider pilot trapped in a tree.

Tired of their constant complaints about the quality of recreational activities at the 4077th, Colonel Potter appoints Hawkeye and B.J. as the new morale officers. Winchester's morale has already reached a new peak: He's ecstatic about his operation on a wounded soldier, Sheridan, which saved the boy's leg, leaving only "negligible" side effects—less use of his right hand. However, the soldier was a concert pianist before the war.
